Cannes Lunchtime: Jill Jones of Mister Smith Entertainment
It’s the 25th year at Cannes for Jill Jones, exec VP of marketing and publicity for Mister Smith Entertainment. Before she joined Mister Smith, Jones, was exec VP of international marketing and publicity at Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment where she oversaw the international launch of Palme d’Or winner “The Tree of Life,” among many other titles. This year, Mister Smith has Steven Spielberg’s “The BFG” in the festival (for Europe, Middle East and Asia) and is also handling international sales on “Mean Dreams,” which is premiering in Director’s Fortnight.
Favorite restaurant
My No.1 special high-end place is L’Affable (pictured). The food is simply amazing, and it’s quite small and it has a really homey feel to it, but it’s also very elegant and really beautiful inside. The food is quite simple but so delicious that I dream about dishes like their roast lamb which I always hope they’ll have when I come back the next year.
Celebration
My first time there we had a wonderful dinner for Terrence Malick and “The Tree of Life,” and after all the stress leading up to it and then the 15-minute ovation, it was just magical as Terrence was there with Brad (Pitt) and Angelina (Jolie). It was like how Cannes should be.
Quick Bite
Then at the other end of the spectrum there’s La Pizza, where I usually have my special order — the pizza with eggplant and onion, which is so good. Both places are part of the whole ritual of being in Cannes, and we have our “Welcome to Cannes” staff dinner there every year. I’m based in Paris, people come from London and L.A. and it’s a great gathering place — and all the other companies are at tables around us, so it’s a great way to launch the festival every year, before the craziness hits.
Everyday Italian
Then there’s two great Italian places I love — Da Laura and La Libera. They both have great ambiance and atmosphere. Da Laura doesn’t take reservations, so there’s always a crowd bustling around, catching up as they wait for a table. At La Libera, it’s small and you always see people you know.
