4/1 NJPW ROAD TO INVASION ATTACK RESULTS
By Matthew Macklin on 2016-04-01 16:45:00
NJPW Road to Invasion Attack, April 1st, Korakuen Hall:
Teruaki Kanemitsu vs Hirai Kawato 10 minute time limit draw
For two guys with such limited experience, this was fantastic. This was such a great basic wrestling match, with basic wrestling holds as these guys start out on their journey in NJPW. Kanemitsu went after the left arm for a time. Kawato hit a couple of really high dropkicks. Kanemitsu was in control for the majority of the contest. The finishing stretch here was great with some great roll up near falls. Kanemitsu locked Kawato in a Boston Crab as the announcers lost it, creating some incredible drama as the bell rang for the end of the match. This was a great showing for two future NJPW stars.
Jay White defeated David Finlay
Yet another great match between these two as both their stars continue to rise. Every match between them is something different. Finlay is still searching for his win in the series and worked over the knee of White. He used his dad's old slam into the ropes and controlled a lot of the match. White made some great fiery comeback and the two exchanged some big moves with Finlay always going back to the leg. The half crab wasn't enough. White made a Styles Clash type counter into a Boston Crab, then added a knee to the back to get another submission win.
KUSHIDA, Jushin Thunder Liger & Tiger Mask IV defeated Gedo, Beretta & Rocky Romero
This was a really fun junior six man with lots of action. Romero still hasn't dropped his grudge with Tiger Mask since his days as Black Tiger. He tried to tear his mask off. This was just a really entertaining back and forth match. KUSHIDA made Gedo submit to the Hoverboard Lock, as he prepares to face new CHAOS member, Will Ospreay at Invasion Attack.
Toru Yano & YOSHI-HASHI defeated Manabu Nakanishi & Yuji Nagata
This was a pretty enjoyable match. Yano and his antics allowed he and YOSHI to control Nagata. Nakanishi was the hot tag guy and ploughed through CHAOS. The finish came when Yano grabbed the ref on a German suplex, lifting the ref about 8 feet in the air. Yano was then able to roll up Nakanishi for the win. It was fun for what it was.
Satoshi Kojima & Hiroyoshi Tenzan defeated Ryusuke Taguchi & Katsuyori Shibata
This was almost identical to the tag at the last Korakuen show, just with Taguchi in the place of Captain New Japan. Shibata got into it heavily with TenKoji and Taguchi only seemed to be in the way. Kojima planted Shibata with a spike DDT. Tenzan hit Shibata in the face with a few nasty headbutts. Kojima got the pin on Taguchi with a Lariat. After the match Tenzan & Shibata has to be separated. Shibata hit Tenzan with a stiff boot and tried to choke him out until he was dragged away.
Special Elimination Match
Elimination via, pinfall, submission or over the top rope
Hiroshi Tanahashi, Togi Makabe, Tomoaki Honma, Michael Elgin & Juice Robinson defeated Bad Luck Fale, Tama Tonga, Tanga Loa, Kenny Omega & Yujiro Takahashi
This saw the NJPW in ring debut of Tanga Loa. We started out with a huge brawl until Juice Robinson squared off with Takahashi. Robinson looked really good and was worked over by BC until Tanahashi got the tag. He was then beat down by all 5 guys until he escaped Yujiro and got the tag to Elgin. Elgin looked like a machine when he picked up Omega & Yujiro at once. Elgin fought off Omega to hit the Elgin Bomb on Yujiro for the first elimination. The first fall was great.
Omega then fought his way through Tanahashi & Elgin. He hit a great snap dragon suplex on Elgin. Omega & Elgin ended up on the apron, with Elgin hitting a Death Valley driver on Omega onto BC at ringside, taking both Elgin & Omega out of the match.
Robinson was the next to go. After a brief battle with Loa, Loa hit a double arm suplex off the top before Tonga & Loa hit their elevated double arm DDT to pin Robinson. Tonga & Loa looked great together here.
We had a brief preview of the IWGP tag title match coming up at Invasion Attack as Honma got the better of Loa with a few Kokeshi's. Loa looked a step or two off here when he was taking moves from Honma. Loa dropkicked Honma off the apron to eliminate him.
Loa got the better of Makabe until Makabe was able to take Loa out of the match with a lariat off the apron. Tonga & Makabe then ended up going over the top to leave us with Fale & Tanahashi.
Tanahashi hit a huge German suplex on Fale. Fale then hit a Grenade and went for the Bad Luck Fall, only to have Tanahashi counter into a hurricanrana and a roll up.
This match was great. It was really well booked to keep everyone strong with lots of great action. The crowd were really hot too, which made it even better.
Kazuchika Okada, Hirooki Goto & Tomohiro Ishii defeated EVIL, BUSHI & Tetsuya Naito
This main event was absolutely awesome. This is worth going out of your way to see. The action and some of the interactions here were superb. It felt like a Shield six man tag with lots of quick bursts of action and the craziness brought by LI. Ishii & BUSHI had a great exchange here. They could have a great singles match together. Naito & Okada were magic together. All the elements are in place for their match next Sunday to be a classic. EVIL had a great showing again here, this time getting a lot in on Okada. Okada got the pin on EVIL after a Rainmaker. You'd be hard pressed to find a better six man tag than this.
