Amazon Prime Boards First German Movie Bullyparade
BERLIN — Amazon has acquired Warner Bros.’ upcoming comedy feature “Bullyparade — Der Film” from German multihyphenate funnyman Michael Bully Herbig.
Based on Herbig’s cult TV comedy show that ran on German TV broadcaster ProSieben from 2001 to 2002, the pic will premiere on the premium Amazon Prime subscription VOD service six months after its theatrical run, Amazon said Thursday.
Following his hit TV show, Herbig went on to make German cinematic history with such megahits as 2001’s comedy-western “Der Schuh des Manitu” and 2004’s “(T)Raumschiff Surprise — Periode 1” — two of the highest-earning German films of all time.
Herbig’s “Bullyparade” co-stars Rick Kavanian and Christian Tramitz will also return for the big-screen treatment. Herbig will direct from a script he co-wrote with Kavanian, Tramitz and Alfons Biedermann. His herbX film is co-producing with Warner Bros. Film Productions Germany, with principal photography set to begin this month.
“We’re thrilled that it’s starting again,” Herbig said, adding that the innovative collaboration with Amazon Prime made “things even more exciting.”
Amazon Video Deutschland CEO Christoph Schneider added: “Our customers love German series and films. This collaboration with Michael Bully Herbig and Warner Bros. is the next step in further expanding our involvement with German films and series and offering them exclusively to our customers.”
Herbig’s most recent project was Wolfgang Petersen’s German comedy heist caper “Vier gegen die Bank,” due out next year. He co-stars in the film with Til Schweiger, Matthias Schweighoefer and Jan Josef Liefers.
Amazon last month announced its first original German-language TV series, also in partnership with Warner Bros. and Schweighoefer. The actor-director will helm, star and co-produce “Wanted,” a suspense skein about a Berlin manager who suddenly finds himself in danger after a mysterious hacking attack. The show premieres on Amazon Prime in Germany and Austria next year.
