Sony is pursuing its idea of a Men in Black-Jump Street crossover and is in exploratory talks with The Muppets director James Bobin to direct a potential movie, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill would reprise their roles of undercover detectives from the Jump Street franchise although Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are not expected to return for MiB. Those roles would go to a new and younger set of actors. Rodney Rothman wrote the script. Sony is a studio that doesn’t have as deep a franchise and IP bench as some other studios so it has been exploring ways to mine what it does have every which way possible. Ghostbusters and Spider-Man are among those that are being deeply exploited. MiB was a hit franchise for the studio that became prohibitively expensive due to the compensation of its stars and producers such as Steven Spielberg. Jump Street, meanwhile, was exhausted by the end of 22 Jump Street (and a faux future history of a franchise was thrown up on the screen during credits). By combining the two, Sony hopes to keep the movies alive. Bobin directed Muppets Most Wanted and is coming off of Alice Through the Looking Glass, the upcoming Alice in Wonderland sequel.
