STX Developing Spy Thriller With Former CIA Agent Henry Crumpton
STX Entertainment and Henry Crumpton’s Aardwolf are developing the spy thriller “Aperture,” based on Crumpton’s memoir “The Art of Intelligence.”
The project reteams STX with Aardwolf following the NBC television series “State of Affairs,” starring Katherine Heigl as a CIA officer who becomes the daily briefer to the president, played by Alfre Woodard. NBC cancelled the series in May after a season.
“The Art of Intelligence: Lessons From a Life in the CIA’s Clandestine Service” was published in 2013 and details Crumpton’s work as a 24-year veteran of the CIA, with lessons about what it means to serve as an honorable spy. The book recounts CIA recruiting missions in Africa, the UAV Predator program, post-9/11 missions in Afghanistan and his time heading up all clandestine CIA operations in the U.S.
Sheroum Kim is overseeing the project for the studio. Crumpton and Rodney Faraon will produce through their Aardwolf Creative. Details of the project are being kept under wraps.
After the publication of “The Art of Intelligence,” Crumpton and former CIA analyst Faraon founded Aardwolf as a production and consulting company established to develop CIA-themed films and TV series. Under the partnership with STX, Crumpton is allowed to maintain the rights to his material.
STX began releasing films last summer with “The Gift,” followed by “The Secret in Their Eyes” and horror-thriller “The Boy.” Upcoming releases include “Hardcore Henry” in April and “The Free State of Jones,” starring Matthew McConaughey, in May.
“The Art of Intelligence” is repped by Andrew Wylie of the Wylie Agency. The news was first reported by the Tracking Board.
