Sebastian Gutierrez is working on the latest draft of the film based on the main antihero in Jules Verne’s “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.” The origin story of Captain Nemo is not a straight adaptation of the novel. Mangold is currently prepping the next installment in “The Wolverine” franchise, starring Hugh Jackman, so “Captain Nemo” is likely to follow that. Disney previously adapted the book into a 1954 film that starred Kirk Douglas and James Mason, who portrayed Nemo. The pic is among the many classic Disney properties that the studio is currently reviving. Disney is prepping a sequel to “Mary Poppins” with Emily Blunt and Lin-Miranda Manuel in talks to star. This project is not the only “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” property in the marketplace as 20th Century Fox is currently developing its own version, which centers more on the book than the Nemo character, with Bryan Singer on board to direct. Mangold is repped by WME and Management 360. The news was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.
