Sundance: Cinetic Media Launches Management Division
Cinetic Media, the scrappy New York-based film and media company run by John Sloss, is launching a management division targeted to multi-hyphenate talent, Variety has learned.
The company already counts directors such as Richard Linklater (“Boyhood), Justin Lin (“Fast Five”) and Charles Ferguson (“Inside Job”) among its clients. But it’s looking to expand its management portfolio, hoping to capitalize on a moment in Hollywood when up-and-coming talent may struggle to find a foothold at the traditional agencies and the bigger studios. Cinetic has already added a new manager in New York who specializes in actors: Avi Lipski, formerly of Brookside Management.
Cinetic, which helped pool financing for such high-profile art films as “Boyhood” and “Carol,” has ambitions to be a one-stop shop for those who can direct, produce, write and act as many entertainment industry players are straddling the lines between television, film, and digital media. The major studios have changed their emphasis in recent years, scaling back their slates to focus on a smattering of tentpole productions, and many artists are learning the benefits of multi-tasking–just ask James Franco or Lena Dunham. At the same time, the rise of online players and the proliferation of cable networks has created a need for unique voices.
Sloss has opened a Los Angeles office which is being staffed by Steve Farneth, a 10-year veteran of Cinetic. Sloss’ management team currently stands at five managers, and he plans to hire more staff.
“The 21st Century is all about creator empowerment,” Sloss tells Variety. “Our best management clients will be those who make full use of the toolbox of services Cinetic offers and those wanting to create, own and distribute their own content of variable shapes and sizes from studio tent poles to online-only episodics. At Cinetic, we feel uniquely positioned to serve a new generation of prolific, multi-hyphenate storytellers because of our experience assembling financing and shepherding content through the ever evolving distribution landscape.”
Cinetic also offers film finance, sales, distribution, corporate consulting, and other services, which Sloss believes will help his clients bring their projects to fruition.
“I looked around a few years ago and said what is the scarce resource,” Sloss says. “It’s that the whole universe of development and production, outside of franchises, is something that the studios have gotten out of. What I wanted to do is create a company that had all these different silos of services that could be put in an a la carte way in the service of creators.”
Among those who have already enlisted Cinetic’s management services are Jennifer Westfeldt (“Friends With Kids”), Matthew Heineman (“Cartel Land”), and Ellar Coltrane (Boyhood). Some of their other clients will be represented in films at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, including Asif Kapadia (“Ali and Nino”), Brian Oakes (“Jim”), Rebecca Miller (“Maggie’s Plan”), Josh Fox (“How to Let Go of the World”) and Maggie Greenwald (“Sophie and the Rising Sun”).
