Freestyle Releasing Gets ‘Friend Request’
Freestyle Releasing’s first movie since Byron Allen’s Entertainment Studios acquired the company last fall has been pegged for release. It will be the horror-thriller Friend Request and will come out in the fourth quarter of 2016.
Directed and co-written by Simon Verhoeven, the film stars Alycia Debnam-Carey (Fear, The Walking Dead) as Laura, a college student who faces unexpected and grave consequences when she unfriends a female loner from her high school on social media. Soon after, she and her friends are stalked by a demonic force. The film also stars Brit Morgan, William Moseley, and Connor Paolo.
Verhoeven penned the project with Matthew Ballen and Philip Koch.
International theatrical distribution is being handled by The Exchange, which recently sold territories in Australia/New Zealand, France, Italy, Eastern Europe, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Latin America, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Israel. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros in the U.K. and Germany.
The deal was negotiated by Freestyle Releasing head of acquisitions Chris Charalambous and WME Global on behalf of German-based producers Quirin Berg and Max Wiedemann of Wiedemann & Berg Film.
Allen, who is founder, chairman and CEO of Entertainment Studios, said he is “excited to further extend our global media footprint with our new feature film division Freestyle Releasing. The movie is a fast-paced psychological horror/thriller that I am sure will have audiences overwhelmed and on the edge of their seats.”
Freestyle released God’s Not Dead to great success in 2014; the film grossed $60.7M domestically on a shoestring budget. Another faith-based pic picked up by Freestyle, Woodlawn, earned a rare A+ CinemaScore and has grossed $14.38M.
