Elstree 1976, a documentary about the people behind the masks of the original Star Wars, will get a US theatrical release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
New York film distribution company FilmRise recently purchased the US rights and is looking to release the film in May, the traditional month Star Wars films debut. FilmRise CEO Danny Fisher said, “We are confident fans will enjoy this exploratory look into the lives of the original film’s actors and extras, as it provides them with a new perspective on this massive cultural phenomenon.”
Directed by John Spira and funded via Kickstarter, the film takes a look at the community of “small part” players and background performers who wore Stormtrooper armor, breathed life into aliens or found their parts cut entirely from the film. Actors like David Prowse and Jeremy Bulloch talk about their time on the film and the odd afterlife given to them via the convention circuit.
