“Supergirl” will be flying high for a full season, as CBS has picked up seven additional episodes of the superhero drama from mega-producer Greg Berlanti, totaling a 20-episode freshman season.
One of the fall’s top-rated new shows, “Supergirl” has averaged 11.24 million viewers a week since it premiered on Oct. 26.
Starring Melissa Benoist as the title character, “Supergirl” follows Superman’s cousin Kara Danvers, who decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be after years of hiding her abilities. Along with Benoist, Calista Flockhart, Mehcad Brooks, Chyler Leigh, Jeremy Jordan and David Harewood round out the cast.
“Supergirl” has had faith from the CBS from the get-go. The drama was the first new series to get the greenlight at the network for the 2015-16 season.
The pickup marks the second full-season order for a new CBS drama this fall, following “Limitless,” the action series starring Jake McDorman, based on the Bradley Cooper film of the same name. Comedy “Life in Pieces,” the only new sitcom on the network this fall, also landed a full 22-episode order for Season 1. Medical drama “Code Black” recently received an additional five-episode order.
“Supergirl” joins a slew of other new fall series that have received full-season orders, including Fox’s “Grandfathered,” “The Grinder” and “Rosewood,” ABC’s “Quantico,” “Dr. Ken” and “The Muppets,” which landed a full season — though only with 16 episodes total, and “Blindspot” on NBC, which not only got a full first season, but also an early second season renewal.
Berlanti, who’s also behind superhero hits “Arrow” and “The Flash” on the CW, exec produces with Ali Adler, Andrew Kreisberg and Sarah Schechter. “Supergirl” hails from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. TV.
