Shane Dawson to Star in ‘Internet Famous’ Movie from Maker, Lakeshore
Shane Dawson, the YouTube-famous comedian and director, will spoof digital celebrity in “Internet Famous,” a feature film from Disney’s Maker Studios and Lakeshore Entertainment’s Off the Dock.
The mockumentary, slated to for digital release in 2016, is the latest bid by Hollywood to tap into the massive fanbases of social-media stars. Dawson has 7 million subscribers for his YouTube comedy channel and 2.8 million Twitter followers — the hope being that his fans, and those of his costars, will be eager to purchase “Internet Famous.”
“Internet Famous” is directed by Michael Gallagher, creator of YouTube’s TotallySketch, and written by Gallagher and comedian Steve Greene, both part of the Maker Studios network.
The movie follows six Internet personalities — played by Dawson, Greene, Amanda Cerny, Christian DelGrosso, Wendy McColm and Richard Ryan — as they travel across the country to compete in a talent competition. The winner receives the chance of a lifetime: their very own TV show.
“‘Internet Famous’ is a natural fit for Maker, and we’re excited to bring this comedy to fans from our own Maker stars both in front of and behind the camera,” said Gabriel Lewis, Maker’s executive VP development and strategy.
Lakeshore CFO Marc Reid added that the new film combines the studio’s 20 years of experience “with a new generation of creators… ‘Internet Famous’ embodies this strategy perfectly.”
Dawson, Gallagher and Greene are repped by UTA; Gallagher and Greene are also managed by Management 360 in addition to being part of the Maker Studios network.
“Internet Famous” is produced by Off the Dock, Maker and Gallagher’s Cinemand banner. Maker and Off the Dock will also co-distribute the film across digital platforms. Off the Dock’s Mark Korshak brought the project to the studio.
The movie is Off the Dock’s second film and its first in-house feature. The Lakeshore division previously worked with Supergravity Pictures to co-distribute comedy “Man Up” starring Kevin Wu, known online as KevJumba, and Justin Chon (“21 & Over”).
Maker recently distributed its first digital film, “Summer Forever,” starring YouTube musician Megan Nicole.
