STX Unveils International Deals, Creates Global Distribution Platform
STX Entertainment just took a major step forward in its goal of becoming a genuine 21st century global player by locking down distribution agreements in more than 50 territories. The platform gives the ambitious company a top-tier worldwide distribution network for the studio’s 12-15 motion pictures a year. The news was announced today by STX chairman Adam Fogelson, COO Thomas McGrath and international sales president John Friedberg.
Some of the major deals include Tobis Film in Germany and Austria; Sun Distribution Group in Latin America and Spain; Roadshow Films in Australia and New Zealand; VVS Films in Canada; Freeman Entertainment in Eastern Europe; AB Svensk Filmindustri in Scandinavia; and The Searchers in Benelux.
Huayi Brothers Media Corp., already a major investor in STX, will handle the studio’s films in China and related territories. The deals, which have been in the works for months, rep the first major international distribution agreements STX has forged.
“We have always envisioned building an international infrastructure that further establishes STX Entertainment as a global content powerhouse,” said Fogelson. “These deals are the first step as we release our growing slate in key countries all over the world.”
The first slate of films to come through the output deals will be The Space Between Us, a sci-fi adventure starring Gary Oldman, Asa Butterfield, Carla Gugino and Britt Robertson; Hardcore, an adrenaline-fueled action film shot in the first person point-of-view, written and directed by Ilya Naishuller that was the biggest acquisition in Toronto; Mile 22, an action thriller from director Peter Berg starring Mark Walhberg, Rhonda Rousey, and Iko Uwais; Bad Moms, a female comedy directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore and starring Mila Kunis, Christina Applegate and Kristen Bell; The Foreigner, an action thriller from director Martin Campbell starring Jackie Chan; Russ & Roger, a comedy inspired by a true story starring Will Ferrell and Josh Gad; and Happytime Murders, a hybrid live-action/animation action comedy from The Henson Company and director Brian Henson.
