STX Says Hello To Horror Flick ‘The Bye Bye Man’
STX Entertainment just added another project to its slate — the horror film The Bye Bye Man, which is based on the short story The Bridge To Body Island by Robert Damon Schneck. The project is being directed by Stacy Title (The Last Supper). STX will be co-financing, marketing and distributing on a worldwide basis and will go sometime in the fourth quarter of 2016. The Los Angeles Media Fund is also co-financing and is co‐producing with Intrepid Pictures. The budget is said to be around $6M.
Intrepid has produced a string of horror films including Safe House and Oculus. Seems like a safe bet for all involved as most of these micro-budgeted horror films tend to make their money back hand over fist and is one of the most profitable genres.
Although the story is said to be “under wraps,” we hear it tells the tale of a man who wants to prove his brother innocent from the crimes of a supernatural murder. Schneck’s story originally appeared in the anthology The President’s Vampire: Strange-but-True Tales Of The United States Of America and centered on odd things that happened after three college students were playing with an Oujia board and a spirit won’t leave.
Jonathan Penner and David Prior adapted the book for the screen. Starring in the film is Douglas Smith (Pan’s Labyrinth), Cressida Bonas (Tulip Fever), Lucien Laviscount (Scream Queens) and Doug Jones (Ouija). Producing is Intrepid’s Trevor Macy, and LAMF’s Simon Horsman and Jeffrey Soros, with Melinda Nishioka co-producing.
This project had an interesting history, starting out in the fall of 2014 as a Weinstein Company/Dimension project. The Bye Bye Man then was turned out but Macy (who is also involved in Ouija 2) stuck with it and partnered with LAMF. They, in turn, partnered with STX.
