The identity of Martin Freeman's character in next year's Captain America: Civil War remains a secret, but the Sherlock and Fargo actor was willing to drop some hints as to his new identity in a recent interview. "He works for the American government," Freeman told Italian site BadTaste. It during a recent appearance at the Giffoni Film Festival. "He works in conjunction with the super heroes, and certain agencies that help to tame the super heroes’ power, I suppose. So you’re not quite sure which side he’s on. It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another." Freeman went on to say that his character is "the kind of character I like, because it’s ambiguous and because you don’t know whether he’s good or bad. I like that area that isn’t black or white. I like the grays, because I think there’s just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line." For long-term Marvel comic book readers, the idea of a morally ambiguous government agent who worked with agencies to tame the superheroes' power is particularly reminiscent of one character in particular: Henry Peter Gyrich, former government liaison to the Avengers and onetime director of the Commission of Superhuman Activities, an agency to tame superheroes' power. Is Freeman the new face of Marvel movie bureaucracy? Captain America: Civil War will be released May 6, 2016.
