'The Lego Movie' directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord will direct the spinoff centered on Harrison Ford's character.
Disney and Lucasfilm are making a Han Solo stand-alone Star Wars film, as The Hollywood Reporter exclusively announced Tuesday. Lego Movie directed Chris Miller and Phil Lord will direct the project based on a script by Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan.
The film, which already has a release date of May 25, 2018, will focus on "how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley."
The toughest task may lie ahead: Lord and Miller will need to use The Force to find a young actor who can embody the swagger, charm and chip-on-his-shoulder attitude that Harrison Ford brought to the iconic loner. THR throws out some names:
Taron Egerton
The 25-year-old Welshman charmed audiences with his performance in Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Secret Service opposite Colin Firth. He proved he can handle the action genre, while also adding in plenty of comedy and swagger.
Nicholas Hoult
Hoult, 25, has had several notable roles in studio films, playing Hank McCoy in Fox's X-Men franchise and starring in Warner Bros.' hit Mad Max. He also charmed as a zombie looking for love in 2013's Warm Bodies.
Miles Teller
Teller, 28, works nearly nonstop, and in the last year alone starred in YA adaptation Divergent, Oscar-nominated drama Whiplash and comedy Two Night Stand. He’s able to mix bigger tentpole roles with meaty dramas: He'll next be seen in this summer’s Fantastic Four and the gritty boxing drama Bleed for This.
Ansel Elgort
Elgort had a breakout performance opposite Shailene Woodley in YA cancer romance The Fault in Our Stars. The 21-year-old actor, who also appears in the Divergent franchise, will next be seen in November Criminals opposite Chloe Moretz.
Garrett Hedlund
Hedlund may be 30, but he could likely play younger. He's done sci-fi (Tron: Legacy) and played brooding, troubled characters (On the Road). He'll next be seen in Warner Bros.’ Pan and Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk.
Nat Wolff
Wolff is definitely on a career upswing after playing a cancer patient in Fault in Our Stars. He will next star in the John Green adaptation Paper Towns, hitting theaters on July 24.
Tye Sheridan
The Mud and Tree of Life star is only 18, but if Lucasfilm and Disney end up aiming for a Han that's closer to his teen years, he'd be a great choice. After starring in films opposite Brad Pitt, Matthew McConaughey and John Travolta, the actor has two studio films coming up: Scouts vs. Zombies and X-Men: Apocalypse. He’ll also be seen in the Sundance film The Stanford Prison Experiment.
Grant Gustin
Gustin stars on TV series The Flash, which has been a huge hit for The CW. Perhaps the 25-year-old is ready for a leap into feature film.
Anthony Ingruber
He may not be as well known as many actors on this list but Ingruber already has a connection to Ford. The 25-year-old actor played the younger version of Harrison Ford in The Age of Adaline, which also starred Blake Lively.
Not age appropriate? Don't think we forgot about Chris Pratt. The Harrison Ford comparisons have been running wild since it was rumored that Pratt could possibly star in a new Indiana Jones film. But Ford was 31 when he shot the original Star Wars films, and Pratt, who has clearly proven his movie star status with Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, is 36 years old, so he would likely not be right for a Han Solo origin tale. Other actors who may have the look and abilities to play Han Solo but are probably a bit too mature include Taylor Kitsch (34) and Aaron Paul (35).
