Do you feel the need? The need for a “Top Gun” sequel?
Rumors of “Top Gun 2″ have swirled since the original touched down in 1986. Skydance CEO David Ellison confirmed that the project is in development and revealed its plot details at a “Terminator Genisys” press junket in Berlin, Collider reports.
“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now,” Ellison said. “He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today.”
He added, “It is very much a world we live in today where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters … It’s really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today.”
Fans of the original film will be delighted to know that Ellison hinted that Tom Cruise will reprise his role. “There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no ‘Top Gun’ without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick,” Ellison said.
Time to blast Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away” in celebration.
Tom Cruise & Jerry Bruckheimer Talking ‘Top Gun 2’
Jerry Bruckheimer went on Twitter to tout a meeting with his Top Gun star Tom Cruise about the long-in-the-works sequel to the iconic 1986 action movie directed by Tony Scott. Bruckheimer flew down to New Orleans to meet with Cruise and talk about a possible plot line, we’re told. Cruise is in Louisiana right now filming Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.
The pair have said for years they have wanted to do a sequel and have been dancing around the idea for about three decades. A source with knowledge of the goings-on said today that “it’s closer now to becoming real than it’s been in 30 years.” In 2013, Bruckheimer said that Scott’s suicide put a damper on moving forward, but that the studio (Paramount) was still high on the possibility.

Top Gun, of course, helped launch Cruise into the Hollywood stratosphere and further established Bruckheimer and his then-producing partner (the late) Don Simpson as moviedom’s biggest tentpole producers of their time.
David Ellison was talking up a sequel on the junket tours last year for Skydance’s Terminator: Genisys, and in November Cruise’s co-star Val Kilmer said he was offered a role.
Paramount Sets 'Top Gun 2' For July 12, 2019, Joseph Kosinski Firmed For Tom Cruise Pic
EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures has set July 12, 2019, as the release date for Top Gun 2, the long-gestating sequel to the 1986 hit. Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski has been set to helm the film, re-teaming him with Tom Cruise, whom he directed in the sci-fi pic Oblivion. Cruise reprises his role as Maverick, now a flight instructor teaching the young macho pilots how to do it. Jerry Bruckheimer is reprising as producer. The script is by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, along with Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz.
The film has long been in development and got close several years ago with the original director Tony Scott planning to step behind the camera again. His untimely death shelved the film for years. It comes at a good time for Paramount, which is reloading its franchises under new chief Jim Gianopulos. This certainly gives the studio a branded title with a lot of wanna see attached to it.
