The studio has engaged Linda Woolverton to write the sequel, and I’m told the studio is keeping Jolie in the loop and that the sequel will be written for her to reprise. That will be a whole different conversation, of course, and they would have to make a new deal with her to reprise. She developed but didn’t star in sequels to either Salt or Wanted but Disney is moving forward and hoping it gets a fairy tale ending. Joe Roth is back as the film’s producer, and it’s unclear whether Robert Stromberg will be back. He’s the Oscar-winning production designer who made his directing debut. Not surprising that another Maleficent would be a major priority for the studio’s revisionist fairy tale slate. It was a pricey film at a reported $180 million, but Maleficent grossed nearly $760 million worldwide. Woolverton is repped by WME.

Joachim Ronning, who co-directed the most recent Pirates of the Caribbean installment, is in talks to direct the Maleficent sequel for Disney, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Angelina Jolie will return to star in the live-action take of the famous animated villain, reprising her role from the 2014 hit that grossed $758 million at the global box office. Robert Stromberg directed the first installment, which also starred Elle Fanning in the film centering on the Sleeping Beauty antagonist. Joe Roth will produce, with Jez Butterworth and Linda Woolverton working on the screenplay. Ronning first caught Hollywood's attention as the co-director of the Norwegian feature Kon-Tiki, which was nominated for the best foreign-language Oscar in 2013. His first big English-language feature was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, which earned $794 at the global box office. The filmmaker is attached to a number of projects including a sci-fi feature Origin that would see him reteam with Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Ronning is repped by UTA.
