Machinima, the digital-media company focused on gaming and fandom, launched a mobile app in partnership with Victorious, a startup aimed at letting Internet content creators connect with their fans.
Machinima, whose backers include Warner Bros. and Google, said it will use Victorious’ mobile platform to connect directly with its fanbase though exclusive content, including access to its network of creators and interactive community social features, and more.
With the Machinima app — available to download for free through Apple’s iTunes and the Google Play store for Android — the company is looking to diversify beyond its traditional YouTube distribution outlet.
“We have a socially engaged, mobile first, video-driven audience, and our new app’s features reflect our viewers core needs and digitally native behaviors,” Machinima CEO Chad Gutstein said. “Victorious provides an app platform built for viewer engagement around social video and we’re excited to take advantage of these features to make the new Machinima app the go-to mobile resource for gaming and fandom entertainment.”
The app, which launches ahead of the 2015 Electronic Entertainment Expo, also includes access to Machinima original series “Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles.”
Separately, Machinima has deals with Vimeo and Vessel, the startup founded by former Hulu CEO Jason Kilar, for access to exclusive content.
Content in Machinima’s new Victorious-powered app will include dispatches from E3 in L.A., which runs June 16-18, by talent including TheZombieUnicorn, Gizzy14Gaza and JeromeASF. Additionally, Machinima on-air host and social community manager Ali Baker will be on the E3 show floor.
Machinima said it plans to eventually develop all of its studio content so that it incorporates the app’s fan-engagement features. Under the pact with Victorious, Machinima will make the app platform available to select creator partners over the next several months to let them launch their own branded mobile apps.
“The gaming community more than ever demands a rich, socially interactive experience with their fellow superfans, and Victorious is thrilled to deliver this level of engagement to such a zealous fanbase,” Sam Rogoway, CEO and co-founder of Victorious, said in a statement.
L.A.-based Victorious, which has raised $25 million in funding, says it has deals with multiple digital stars and multichannel networks for their own dedicated apps, including Michelle Phan, Jenna Marbles, AwesomenessTV, Freddie Wong, DigiTour Media, Ryan Higa, the Young Turks, Jukin Media, Boyce Avenue, Joey Graceffa, Lia Marie Johnson and GloZell.
