STX Entertainment Taps Ex-Marvel Exec As Physical Production Chief
STX Entertainment continues to ramp up its exec staff, today tapping Ross Fanger as EVP and Head of Physical Production for the STX Entertainment Motion Picture Group. He will begin work immediately on the studio’s slate of 12-15 motion pictures annually, responsible for physical and postproduction on all new projects produced by the film studio.
Fanger has been an executive producer and production manager for nearly three decades beginning at Disney. As head of physical production at Marvel Studios, he oversaw principal photography, postproduction and VFX on films including Iron Man and The Hulk. He also spent 10 years at Fox as co-producer/unit production manager on pics including The Fantastic Four and The Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer, as well as X-Men, X-Men 2 and X-Men: The Last Stand and Tim Burton’s Planet Of The Apes.
Most recently, Fanger served as executive producer on Hercules starring Dwayne Johnson, The A Team and The Grey.
“When it comes to making and delivering our movies, Ross is truly one of the smartest executives in this field,” said Adam Fogelson, chairman of the Motion Picture Group. “Whether he is navigating the intricacies of a state’s specific production incentives or helping a filmmaker find the best crew or production facilities virtually anywhere in the world, Ross is known as a detail-oriented and exceptionally talented production leader and we are thrilled to welcome him to our team.”
That team is growing. Most recently, Fogelson and president and chief content officer Oren Aviv brought in Mandalay’s Cathy Schulman as the studio’s top production exec. There are already four release dates for the initial slate: two this year with the psychological thriller The Gift on August 7 from Blumhouse and the crime thriller Secret In Their Eyes on October 23. To follow in 2016: William Brent Bell horror pic The Boy on January 22 and the Matthew McConaughey action-drama The Free State Of Jones on March 11.
STX Entertainment is led by Robert Simonds and was co-founded by TPG Growth, a leading global private investment firm with $65 billion of capital under management. In addition to backing from TPG, investors include financial partner Hony Capital, a leading private equity firm in China; and business interests of Gigi Pritzker and Beau Wrigley.
STX also sealed a deal in April with China’s largest privately held film firm, Huayi Brothers Media Corp, in a three-year pact that begins next year.
