Despite an aggressive door policy, the China Night party, held Tuesday evening at Cannes Majestic Beach, turned out to be one of the most classy and enjoyable of the big setpiece soirees so far this Cannes.
Tastefully decked out with modernist interpretations of traditional Chinese lanterns, the pier was an outrigger for finger-food, sofa lounging and innumerable selfies.
In the main party venue, the lively throng was unable to drain the seemingly endless supply of champagne or to completely outpace the chefs who provided French interpretations of several Asian cuisines. Chocolate fountains particularly entertained and enthralled female party people.
The absence of the usual Chinese firework display was widely noted by guests. But alternative spectacle was provided in the form of dancers and a laser light show, made more dramatic by scything through clouds of artificial smoke.
