Lewis Collins, the British-born actor who co-starred in cult 1970s TV show “The Professionals,” has died. He was 67.
“He died peacefully at his L.A. home surrounded by his family. Privacy is asked for at this very sad time,” his agent told the BBC.
It is understood that Collins had fought a five-year battle with cancer.
“The Professionals” was based around a fictional crime fighting unit called CI5 and ran for 57 episodes on ITV between 1977 and 1983. It was known for its rough and tumble action and car chases featuring a Ford Capri.
Collins’ film roles included actioners like “Who Dares Wins” and “The Commander.”
It was widely reported that he was considered as a candidate for the role of James Bond. But he later dropped out of acting and set up a computer business in the U.S.
“We spent a very tough four years together in making ‘The Professionals,’ and shared in the production of what has become an icon of British television,” said Martin Shaw, his “Professionals” co-star. “He will be remembered as part of the childhood of so many people, and mourned by his fans. I send my love and condolences to his family, and the great many who will miss him.”
