variety.com/2015/film/asia/cemetery-of-splendor-strand-releasing-1201500054/Cannes: Strand Poised To Buy Thai Director’s ‘Cemetery of Splendour’ Strand Releasing is to acquire North American rights to former Palme d’Or winner Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s “Cemetery of Splendour.” The film played this week in Cannes in the festival’s Un Certain Regard section. The international rights are handled by Germany’s The Match Factory and the deal was sealed Tuesday in Cannes. Strand previously handled Weerasethakul’s Cannes winner “Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives,” which won the top prize in Cannes in 2009. “Splendour” features an incurable sleeping sickness which allows Weerasethakul to dwell on matters both intensely personal and political. The references to the current military government which took over Thailand a year ago, are barely disguised. The film is a Thailand-U.K.-France-Germany-Malaysia co-production. It is a A Kick the Machine Films and Illuminations Films (Past Lives) production, in co-production with Anna Sanders Films, Geissendoerfer Film- und Fernsehproduktion, Match Factory Prods., ZDF/Arte and Astro Shaw, Asia Culture Center-Asian Arts Theatre, Detaille Films, Louverture Films, Tordenfilm, with the participation of L’Aide aux Cinema du Monde, Centre National du Cinema et de l’Image Animee — Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres et du Developpement International — Institute Francais.
