‘Room’ Sells Out For FilmNation; Universal Takes Multi-Territories – Cannes
In what’s been a busy Cannes so far for FilmNation Entertainment, the company has sold out international on Frank helmer Lenny Abrahamson’s upcoming Room. A promo for the hot drama project was screened in FNE’s offices this week, striking a strong emotional chord with buyers and bringing about competitive situations. Universal came in for key European markets including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Benelux and Scandinavia, as well as Latin America.
Among other suitors, Studiocanal picked up the UK; Village Roadshow bought Australia; and Culture Entertainment took Japan. Offshore deals were led by FilmNation’s Head of Sales Tara Erer. A24 last year acquired U.S. rights which were brokered by UTA.
Produced by The Lobster‘s Element Pictures and No Trace Camping, Room stars Brie Larson, Jacob Tremblay, Joan Allen and William H. Macy. It’s based on the bestselling 2010 novel by Emma Donoghue, who adapted the screenplay about a woman and her 5-year-old son, Jack, who live in confinement in a 10-foot by 10-foot single room. Room is the only home Jack has ever known, but as his curiosity is building alongside Ma’s own desperation, she knows it cannot contain either indefinitely.
Also in the cast are Sean Bridgers (Rectify), Tom McCamus (The Samaritan) and Megan Park (What If).
Among other territories sold were Canada (Elevation Pictures); Israel (Lev Films); Poland (Monolith); Greece (Spentzos); Iceland (Sam Films); Middle East (Italia); Switzerland (Elite Film); Turkey (Aqua/Pinema); Hong Kong (Bravos); ex-Yugoslavia (Blitz); South Africa (Ster Kinekor); Thailand (IPA); Indonesia (PT Amero/Prima); Singapore (Shaw); Korea (Contents Gate); Taiwan (Maison Motion); and Pan Asian pay-TV went to Fox International Channels.
Element’s Ed Guiney produced Room with David Gross. Executive producers are Andrew Lowe for Element and Jeff Arkuss and Jesse Shapira for No Trace Camping. Donoghue, Rose Garnett, Tessa Ross and David Kosse also serve as executive producers.
Room is an Element Pictures and No Trace Camping production, in association with Film4, Telefilm Canada, and the Irish Film Board.
