The Mindy Project has done it again — cheating death a second time with a 26-episode order at Hulu. The streaming service had been in negotiations with Mindy producer Universal TV about picking up the quirky comedy following its cancellation by Fox after three seasons. Hulu officially calls this a fourth season order, though its size equals two normal seasons on cable or digital and matches the two-season, 26-episode pickup fellow Universal TV comedy The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt received by Netflix. Hulu has the option to order additional seasons, with a decision to be made after the Season 4 premiere whose date is TBD.
The order by Hulu brings the number of Mindy episodes to 93. Not bad, considering that the show had to beat the odds twice.Originally developed for NBC, The Mindy Project, created by and starring The Office alumna Mindy Kaling, got a pass at the script stage in early 2012. Quick thinking among the show’s producers led to a move to Fox where the project got a pilot and then series order. Three years later, The Mindy Project is on the move again, this time from TV to digital, and will become a Hulu original series.
Hulu was a natural destination for Mindy as the platform is the exclusive streaming home to all past episodes of the series, acquired in a 2014 library deal with NBCUniversal.
“Mindy has been a beloved member of the Hulu family, so this deal is a natural extension of our relationship,” said Craig Erwich, Hulu’s SVP and Head of Content.
While its broadcast ratings on Fox were soft, Mindy has done very well in online viewing, ranking as a top show on Hulu since its premiere.
“I am thrilled The Mindy Project has found a new home on Hulu, where so many of our fans are already watching the show,” said Kaling.
The single-camera Mindy Project follows a skilled OB/GYN (Kaling) navigating the tricky waters of both her personal and professional life. The series also stars Chris Messina, Ed Weeks, Ike Barinholtz, Beth Grant and Xosha Roquemore. Universal and 3 Arts produce, with Kaling, Howard Klein, Matt Warburton, Charlie Grandy and Michael Spiller executive producing.
Hulu has been rapidly expanding its original slate with the upcoming series 11/22/63, from J.J. Abrams; Amy Poehler, Julie Klausner and Billy Eichner’s Difficult People; Jason Reitman’s Casual; and Jason Katims’ The Way. The company also just gave a script-to-series order to drama Myst, based on the cult video game, and landed the off-network rights to classic sitcom Seinfeld.
