File this one under: “Well, duh.” Disney/Marvel’s superhero sequel Avengers: Age Of Ultron has passed the $1 billion threshold in worldwide box office in its 24th day of release. That makes the superhero mashup the first franchise ever to hit the 10-digit mark with each of its first two films. In fact, only three other movie series have had two pics join the three-comma club: Transformers, The Dark Knight and Pirates Of The Caribbean.
Ultron cruised into the all-time top 20 in global coin, passing 2008’s The Dark Knight, and could shove a few others aside by the end of the weekend. But it still has to bank more than $400 million to become even the biggest film of 2015: Furious 7 sits at $1.47 billion in its seventh frame, fourth all-time behind 2012’s The Avengers. Ultron, however, should pass Universal’s septua-sequel today or tomorrow as the top domestic grosser of the year; it sits at $333 million heading into the weekend.
Joss Whedon’s pic is Disney’s eighth billion-dollar baby and Disney/Marvel’s third, behind The Avengers and 2013’s Iron Man 3, which is No. 7 all-time. Ultron has opened at No. 1 in every market, and as the juggernaut rages on, it still has at least one major territory to conquer: The film opens July 4 in Japan.
