The Portsmouth, Ohio, comic shop Sorta My Comics has reopened in a larger space after closing a few months ago when the mall where it was located shut down. Owner Vincent Herman is a longtime comics fan who stresses the good deals to be had at his store: “We aren’t in it to get rich or anything like that. We don’t think it is right to buy a comic or game for $4 and then turn around and price it for $25. That isn’t how we are.”

Sorta My Comics expands
A local comic shop, Sorta My Comics, closed its doors last month, along with the many other vendors in Vetter’s Market, when they left to find a new location in downtown Portsmouth. The comic shop started eight months ago and after a profitable and positive venture, owner Vincent Herman decided he needed a larger space to operate out of. He has since opened again, on the second floor of River Town Antiques on Second Street.
The new location has ten times the space and comes with the promise of card tournaments and other competitive events. It also allows a reading corner, a section dedicated to games, and much more.
“In opening Sorta My Comics, I’ve realized that there are so many people just like me in the community,” Herman said. “It has been great and I only want to grow and make more opportunities available for my customers.”
Herman said that opening a business has been a huge learning curve, but he feels like he is getting the hang of it pretty quickly and has learned much more about how businesses operate.
“It has taken a lot of reading and studying,” Herman said, when asked about what it took to get where he is now with his business savvy.
According to Herman, when customers enter Sorta My Comics, they will immediately recognize how fairly priced everything is.
“We aren’t in it to get rich or anything like that. We don’t think it is right to buy a comic or game for $4 and then turn around and price it for $25. That isn’t how we are,” Herman said. “We also offer the best prices in town. If a customer should walk in and see something they like, but have found it cheaper at one of our competitors, not only will be match their price, but we will add 10 percent off of that.”
Herman said that the low cost of his merchandise goes hand-in-hand with why he started his business venture in the first place. The young businessman has been passionate about comic books since he was a kid. Growing up and never receiving an allowance, he wasn’t able to constantly do things and relied on his imagination most of the time.
“I would often walk to the local KB Toys and buy some gum that way I could walk around for a while and read a comic or two before heading back home,” Herman said.
Sorta My Comics keeps its prices low, so that anyone can afford comics and games.
The comic shop will be starting its tournaments with YuGiOh and Magic the Gathering, but will offer more options at a later time. To keep updated on what the shop will offer, follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SortaMyComics.
“There are other options in the area for comics, but one of the things that makes us different from most is our passion for comics,” Herman said. “I’ve been reading comics and keeping up with these characters since I was a kid and they are a part of who I am today.”
Sorta My Comics is at 545 Second Street in Portsmouth. The store owner can be reached at 740-727-5118.
