NBC Embraces Binge-Viewing, Releasing All ‘Aquarius’ Episodes Online After Premiere
In the clearest sign of Netflix’s influence on traditional TV networks, NBC will make all 13 episodes of its David Duchovny drama “Aquarius” available for online and VOD viewing following the series’ May 28 broadcast premiere.
NBC said the episodes would be available on NBC.com and its authenticated NBC app, as well as on cable VOD platforms on the morning after the premiere. The linear telecasts of the period drama, which features the “X-Files” alum as a Los Angeles police detective in 1967 who investigates early Manson Family activity, will feature a reduced commercial load in an effort to mirror the online and VOD versions and keep viewers engaged.
“With ‘Aquarius’ we have the opportunity to push some new boundaries to give our audience something no broadcast network has done before. We are fully aware how audiences want to consume multiple episodes of new television series faster and at their own discretion, and we’re excited to offer our viewers this same experience since all 13 episodes of this unique show have been produced and are ready to be seen,” NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt said. “I appreciate the enthusiasm we’ve gotten from the producers of the show and our partner Marty Adelstein of Tomorrow Studios to launch this series in a new, forward-thinking way.”
The 13 episodes will be available en masse for one month after the premiere. The linear telecasts will roll out weekly in the Thursday 9 p.m. slot.
“Aquarius” hails from Tomorrow Studios, a joint venture between Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios. John McNamara created the series and exec produces with Adelstein, Duchovny, Becky Clements and Melanie Greene.
