Wingard has done mostly minor films, including cult horror hits The Guest and You’re Next, and is slated to be the director for Cinemax’ Outcast series, based on the Robert Kirkman comics. Warners has had the Death Note feature, based on the first three manga volumes, in development since it acquired the rights in 2009. In 2011, Shane Black became attached to direct, but that version of the project didn’t come together. Jeremy Slater, who did a version of the Fantastic Four script did the last draft of the Death Note screenplay, according to the report.

An adaptation of the manga series already adapted for film in Japan, the story follows a student who discovers a mysterious notebook that kills whomever’s name is written in it. When the student meets the notebook’s previous owner, a demon bent on ridding the world of anyone it deems evil or useless, he ends up tracked by an Interpol officer investigating the unexplainable deaths of several criminals. The American adaptation will be directed by Adam Wingard with a script by Jeremy Slater (Fantastic Four). Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka are producing, with Doug Davison and Brian Witten executive producing. Wolff, who is onscreen in The Intern, is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.

Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Jason Hoffs and Masi Oka are producing the project, which was previously adapted as a movie in its home country of Japan, where it spawned a sequel. Wolff plays a student who discovers a supernatural notebook that allows him to kill anyone simply by writing the victim’s name. A cat-and-mouse game ensues when he’s tracked by a reclusive police officer. Jeremy Slater (“Fantastic Four”) wrote the more recent draft of the script. Shane Black was previously attached to direct. Doug Davison and Brian Witten are exec producing. Niija Kuykendall and Nik Mavinkurve are overseeing the film for the studio. Production is set to begin next spring. Qualley can still be seen as Jill Garvey on HBO’s “The Leftovers” and also stars opposite Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling in “The Nice Guys,” which bows next summer. She is repped by UTA and Management 360.
