Fortitude Takes On Sales For QED’s Cannes Slate; What Will They Have To Sell?
Fortitude International is coming to QED Intl’s rescue just in time for Cannes with Nadine De Barros and her sales team handling sales at the market for the troubled company. De Barros and her Fortitude colleagues will handle remaining sales on QED titles Rock the Kasbah, The Family Fang, Franny, Time Out of Mind and Strange But True. Not included in the line-up are Bruce Lee pic Birth of the Dragon and Robert De Niro-Zak Efron two-hander Dirty Grandpa, both of which are the subject of ongoing litigation between QED Holdings chief execs Sasha Shapiro and Anton Lessine and former QED chief exec Bill Block.
De Barros will premiere new footage from The Family Fang, directed by Jason Bateman, who co-stars with Nicole Kidman and Christopher Walken. CAA is repping US rights. De Barros will be supported by Fortitude’s VP of International Katie Irwin in Cannes and newly hired Samantha Peel as Director of International Sales and Marketing.Licensing deals on the QED films will continue to be administered by the QED International team, with servicing and delivery handled by QED’s long-time service provider Motion Media Services.
A number of the titles presented already have presales in place.
De Barros is not expected to have any new titles to sell on behalf of QED Intl. That would not be a surprise given the uncertainty over QED’s future. The company has witnessed a number of exec departures in recent months. Last month, John Friedberg, EVP of international sales and distribution at QED, resigned. He had been one of the top executives at QED, instrumental in bringing equity to Barry Levinson’s Rock the Kasbah, Texas Killing Fields and Alex Cross. He handled international sales on Dirty Grandpa and David Ayer’s critically acclaimed Fury with Brad Pitt. In addition, he helped with sales on That Awkward Moment starring Zac Efron and Franny starring Richard Gere, Dakota Fanning and Theo James.
That follows on from founder Bill Block’s departure in February to launch Merced Media. Block and QED Holdings co-chiefs Sasha Shapiro and Anton Lessine are currently trading accusations and, in QED’s case, a trademark infringement and unfair competition complaint against Block.
A rep for QED declined to comment when contacted by Deadline.
