Cathy Schulman has joined STX Entertainment as a top production executive, Variety has learned.
Schulman most recently spent eight years as president of Mandalay Pictures.
Her title has yet to be formalized, but she began work at the newly launched studio Monday and has already been reaching out to members of the creative community. She will report to president and chief content officer Oren Aviv.
STX Entertainment was launched last year by producer Robert Simonds with the goal of fielding 12 to 15 films a year, with budgets ranging from $20 million to $80 million. Upcoming releases include the psychological thriller “The Gift” with Jason Bateman and Joel Edgerton; “The Secret in Their Eyes,” a remake of the Oscar-winning Argentinian film of the same name to star Julia Roberts; and “The Free State of Jones,” an action-drama starring Matthew McConaughey.
Schulman, who won an Oscar for producing “Crash,” is tasked with putting together projects and bringing filmmakers and talent on board. STX Entertainment tapped Schulman because it is ramping up and expanding its production slate after hammering out a co-financing deal with China’s Huayi Bros.
Her other producing credits include “Bernie,” “The Illusionist,” “The Kids Are All Right,” “Soul Surfer” and the upcoming thriller “Dark Places.”
Schulman has been an advocate for promoting greater diversity in film through her work as president of Women in Film. She is also a board member of Film Independent, and teaches graduate level film producing at UCLA and the Dodge College of Film Media and Arts at Chapman University.
