He was 48. Crombie was adept at playing clean-cut characters of unexpected depth and warmth, and to generations of Canadians he’ll always be Gilbert Blythe to Anne Shirley as played by Megan Follows (currently Queen Catherine on the CW’s Reign). Crombie, who died April 15, also appeared in followups to the series including telefilms Anne of Avonlea (1987) and Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (2000). Other TV roles included The Secret World of Benjamin Bear, Slings and Arrows, Power Play and Mont Royal. He also is credited as writer on the documentary Waiting for Ishtar and appeared in an episode of The Good Wife earlier this year. Crombie’s stage roles included performances at the Stratford Festival in Ontario, in Toronto and in The Drowsy Chaperone on Broadway in 2008. He played poet Robert Graves in Stephen Massicotte’s The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion and appeared in Morris Panych’s The Dishwashers and Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia. He also appeared in U.S. regional productions of Clybourne Park and Benediction, based on Kent Haruf’s novel.
