Jim Amos, who spent about 30 years in distribution at Sony Pictures Entertainment, is joining STX Entertainment as senior VP of theatrical distribution. He will work with STX president of distribution Kevin Grayson as the newly launched studio gears up to release its slate of films. The move comes only a day after announcing a ramp up in its marketing ranks.
Amos, who will report to Grayson, will help book STX films nationwide as the studio starts pumping out films next year. After signing a multi-year pact with Huayi Brothers in China earlier this month, STX is going to start producing, marketing and distribution 12 to 15 films a year in the already planned model of $20M-$60M budget range.
STX also has a deal worked out with the nation’s exhibitors —as AMC Theaters, Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark and Carmike. Before they even announced the company a year ago, executives negotiated separately with exhibs individually. By making deals directly with the theater owners, STX established a major shift away from the traditional way of doing business with exhibition.
Also joining Amos is Mark Mulcahy and Robert Springer. As the studio’s VP of In-Theater marketing, Mulcahy comes from a background rich in in-theater marketing at Paramount Pictures where he spent 15 years. But before joining STX, he was VP of exhibitor relations for The Weintstein Co. where he was involved in such films as Silver Linings Playbook, Django Unchained, The Imitation Game and Paddington.
Springer will take the reins as VP of theatrical distribution and operations. Many in the distribution industry will remember him as the guy who spearheaded the efforts of Rentrak’s first international systems for Brazil, Hong Kong, Mexico and other markets. He most recently was senior VP and product manager at Cinedigm Theatrical Distribution Systems.
The new marketing and distribution teams will be huddling over the coming months to ensure the successful release of the following films:
Writer-director Gary Ross’ Free State Of Jones starring Matthew McConaughey as Newton Knight who was the leader of one of the greatest rebellions in Civil War history; a remake of the 2010 Oscar Best Foreign Language Film The Secret in Their Eyes with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts; the psychological thriller The Gift from producers Rebecca Yeldham and Jason Blum’s Blumhouse with Jason Bateman, Rebecca Hall, and Joel Edgerton (who is making his directorial debut); and the horror film The Boy from William Brent Bell (The Devil Inside). Huayi Brothers is STX’s partner on all of these films.
