Sony’s Crackle To Introduce Scheduled Programs In Addition To VOD Offerings
Sony just added some business and tech crunch to Crackle, its streaming entertainment service. It’s about to introduce a linear TV-like experience, the company tells advertisers today in its first solo upfront presentation. Crackle will have a schedule of programs that begin playing when a user accesses the service, in addition to its on-demand offerings in a revamped channel guide. The new “Always On” programming will appear first in May on Roku, with other platforms to be added over the summer.
“Something will always be playing—which means viewers can settle into one of their favorite movies, or browse for something new without ever having to stop the video playing in front of them,” says Crackle GM Eric Berger. “’Start Over’ is just a click away, and you can simply scroll through one of our curated channels to see what else is playing throughout various day parts.”
The company also laid out its new and returning original content.
The line up includes Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser, with David Spade and Christopher Walken, out on July 16. Crackle describes this as the “first ever made-for-digital sequel to a major motion picture.”
New series include a 13-episode stop-motion comedy series, Supermansion. Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston is among the actors lending his voice to the production, due in the fall. Later this year Crackle will have its first original hour-long scripted drama, The Art of More, with Dennis Quaid. And in spring 2016 it will have a feature length sequel to Dead Rising:Watchtower.
Among the returning series are Jerry Seinfeld’s unscripted Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. The new season, beginning June 4, will have Bill Maher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah, and Jim Carrey. Also coming back is Sports Jeopardy!, the game show hosted by sportscaster Dan Patrick.
