variety.com/2015/tv/news/dish-network-outside-television-carriage-pact-1201467969/The independent cable channel Outside Television has set a carriage pact with Dish Network. The deal offers a national distribution boost to the channel devoted to sports, adventure-seekers and outdoor recreation buffs. Deal calls for Dish to make the channel available as a free preview to its broad base of 14 million subscribers through May 6. After that, Outdoor will be added to Dish’s Multi-Sport Pack tier. The package of about 35 sports channels offers more limited distribution than if Outside was included as part of Dish’s general entertainment offerings. But the deal is nonetheless a milestone for the channel that launched in 2010 as a partnership between Santa Fe, N.M.-based Outside magazine and Outside Television CEO Mark Burchill. According to Outside, the channel is now available in 30 million homes through Xfinity, Cox Cable, Google Fiber and other distributors. It is the rare example of an independent cable channel launching during the past decade. “We’ve partnered with Outside Television to take our customers directly into the action of extreme outdoor sports,” said Josh Clark, Dish’s VP of programming. “We are expanding our lineup of active outdoor lifestyle programming and unconventional sports coverage from mountaineering to BASE jumping and kitesurfing.” Dennis Gillespie, senior VP of distribution for Outside Television, hailed the pact as making it easier for the “more than 140 million active outside enthusiasts living across the U.S. to now find their own way into Outside Television.”
