Lakeshore Entertainment Launches Digital Studio, Acquires Film From YouTuber Justin Chon
Lakeshore Entertainment has set its sights on digital.
The film production and financing company has launched Off the Dock, a digital studio that will finance, produce, acquire and distribute films from digital influencers that are aimed at the always-connected, YouTube-watching generation.
"We are excited to blend Lakeshore’s knowledge and skills gained from its 20-year track record of traditional filmmaking and distribution with the new world of digital influencers," said Lakeshore CFO Marc Reid. "We think each world can elevate the other."
Off the Dock's first film is Man Up, a project written and directed by Justin Chon (Twilight). The film stars Chon, who is also active on YouTube with a channel that reaches more than 200,000 subscribers, and fellow YouTube creator Kevin Wu as friends who are forced to prepare for the unexpected when one of them becomes a father.
Man Up is produced by Kinetic Films. Lakeshore has partnered with digital-focused film studio Supergravity Pictures to distribute the film through digital VOD and other channels. Lakeshore is handling international distribution for the film.
"Justin and Kevin really pop onscreen together throughout the film," said Supergravity co-founder Max Benator. "Given both of their deeply connected audiences and the movie's subject matter, Man Up is the perfect film for the direct-to-consumer model."
Lakeshore's upcoming theatrical releases include The Age of Adaline starring Blake Lively, Harrison Ford and Michiel Huisman, which hits theaters April 24, and The Vatican Tapes starring Michael Pena and Djimon Hounsou, which rolls out July 24.
