Netflix Launch In Australia Gets Qualified Welcome From Producers Organization
The launch this week of movie subscription service Netflix in Australia and New Zealand got a qualified welcome from Australian producers.
Consumers will find that the service launches (Tuesday, March 24 local time) at roughly the same prices as the North American feed, a price point lower than many of its local competitors Stan, Presto and Quickflix.
In Australia the basic, single stream, standard definition package will cost A$8.99 (US$6.99) a month, while in New Zealand it will sell for a monthly NZ$9.99 (US$7.56). A four stream, ultra HD ‘family’ package will sell in Australia for AS$14.99 (US$11.67). A month of free trial is available.
Trade association, Screen Producers Australia, said that Netflix needs to be involved in acquiring and producing current Australian content.
“We trust that this will not just provide an avenue for imported content and local catalogue titles, but also will result in a valuable contribution to Australian screens through original local production,” said Matthew Deaner, SPA CEO in a statement circulated to media.
Netflix said that at launch it will carry content from Australian rights holders including Village Roadshow Entertainment, Beyond Distribution, Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Other content is sourced from Warner Bros., BBC, FOX, NBC Universal, and The Walt Disney Company, as well as its own productions.
It will offer catch-up seasons one and two of “Orange is the New Black,” and announced that the third series will be available on June 12, the same date as the show’s U.S. release. Netflix will be the exclusive Australian carrier of season three of “House of Cards.”
Other shows available at launch include: family thriller “Bloodline;” adventure story “Marco Polo;” “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt;” “Chelsea Handler: Uganda Be Kidding Me Live;” DreamWorks Animation’s “The Adventures of Puss in Boots;” and documentary “Virunga.”
In the coming months, it will add Marvel’s “Daredevil;” dramatic thriller “Sense8;” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II: The Green Destiny,” and comedy series “Grace and Frankie.”
