Sony Pictures Will Adapt Broadway’s ‘Beautiful: The Carole King Musical’ For Screen
Sony Pictures is turning the Tony Award-winning Beautiful: The Carol King Musical into a feature film, the studio announced today. Douglas McGrath, who wrote the book for the hit production, will be adapting it, with original stage producer Paul Blake sharing production credit with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone.
“Theatrical audiences both on Broadway and in the West End have responded to Beautiful not only to relive Carole King’s timeless classics, but to experience the ways they illustrate her triumphant and joyful life story,” said Sony’s Michael De Luca in a statement. “We’re thrilled to be bringing this inspiring and powerful musical to movie audiences everywhere.”
The jukebox-musical-cum-biographical-play tells the story of King’s early life and career, through a combination of flashbacks and renditions of popular songs from the era. The show set several house records at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre and earned back its production costs after about 10 months. It would go on to win Tonys for Best Lead Actress (Jessie Mueller) and Best Sound Design. It’s currently nominated for 8 Laurence Olivier Awards; the ceremony will be held April 8.
For the film, Sony has secured rights to use songs by Carole King, as well as fellow subjects of the musical Gerry Goffin, Cynthia Weil, and Barry Mann. The stage version included many of King’s most notable hits, including “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “Up On The Roof,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” “Tapestry” and “You’ve Got a Friend.”
