Alchemy Twists Up Deal For ‘Rolling Papers’ At SXSW
Alchemy has made its second deal at Austin today, scoring worldwide rights to the documentary Rolling Papers. Director Mitch Dickman’s film centers on Ricardo Baca, Alchemy Logowho became the country’s first pot editor after The Denver Post started The Cannabist in the wake of Colorado legalization vote. “Ricardo Baca’s story will keep people interested in the already thought-provoking Colorado marijuana culture,” said Dickman, “and we’re happy to have played a part in letting everyone get behind the scenes of this modern cultural phenomenon.”
The film was produced by Britta Erickson, Daniel Junge, Karl Kister, Alison Greenberg-Millice and Katie Shapiro and executive produced by Dave Berlin, Joni Eddy, Chad Troutwine and Walker Diebel. “Rolling Papers is a must-see documentary about how the media and society deal with the rapid cultural shift to marijuana legalization,” said Alchemy CEO Bill Lee. “The film couldn’t be more timely, and we look forward to bringing it to a worldwide audience.”
Alchemy VP Acquisitions Jeff Deutchman negotiated the deal with Zac Bright and Kevin Iwashina of Preferred Content, CAA and Richard Turner of Artioti Media Consulting on behalf of the filmmakers. Earlier today, Alchemy picked up North American rights at SXSW to Moonwalkers, Antoine Bardou-Jacquet’s action comedy starring Ron Perlman, Rupert Grint and Robert Sheehan.
Alchemy has been active since rebranding from Millennium Entertainment, most recently landing the high-profile Sundance Film Festival title Strangerland starring Nicole Kidman, Joseph Fiennes and Hugo Weaving.
