Wayne County Community College’s Downriver campus is teaming up with Tony Miello, a local artist to plan a 1-day comic book convention later this year at the school.
The school, 21000 North Line Road in Taylor, reached out to Miello to plan the show as a way to showcase local artists and creators.
Deemed the Michigan Comic Book Expo, the show is slated for Sept. 26.
“I’m in the process of lining up some programming now,” Miello said. “We’re going to have some movies shorts and some comic book writing panels.”
Miello called the event a “slow build,” in that he’s not trying to plan a huge show from the start.
“It’s a 1-day show, so it’s tough to get some people that might have other shows they could go to for multiple days,” he said. “We’re going to build from this year and be around for awhile.”
Planning a convention isn’t anything new for the veteran artist, who was also a founding member of the Detroit FanFare convention several years ago.
“We had to pack up the tents on FanFare,” he said, “but I still wanted to do something.”
The idea for this show came from the college itself. They reached out to Miello because he has taught comic book creating workshops there in the past.
“The school to do something more,” he said. “Something where we had creators and everything.”
Admission is free to the show for fans. Miello said the college is using the show as a community outreach program.
Vendor space for artists and anyone that wants to sell comic related merchandise is still available. For more information contact Miello at MCBExpo@Gmail.com or find the convention’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/mcbexpo.
