STX Entertainment Dates Films With Matthew McConaughey, Julia Roberts, Jason Blum
Less than a year after it launched, STX Entertainment has announced release dates for four films starring the likes of Matthew McConaughey, Jason Bateman, Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman.
The first of these films, an untitled thriller from micro-budget maestro Jason Blum (“The Purge”), will debut on July 31. It stars Bateman and Rebecca Hall (“Iron Man 3″) as a married couple whose lives are upended when a high school acquaintance reappears in their lives. It will face off against “Mission: Impossible 5,” sci-fi thriller “Self/Less” and boxing drama “Southpaw” with Jake Gyllenhaal.
That will be followed on October 23 by “The Secret in Their Eyes,” a remake of the Oscar-winning Argentinian film of the same name, with Roberts, Kidman and Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave”). The film centers on a team of FBI investigators who must search for the killer of a colleague’s teenage daughter. “The Secret in Their Eyes” premieres against the musical “Jem and the Holograms,” “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension” and “The Last Witch Hunter” with Vin Diesel.
On February 5, 2016, STX will unveil “The Boy” from director William Brent Bell (“The Devil Inside”), starring Lauren Cohan (“The Walking Dead”). The film looks at a young woman who become a nanny to a wealthy English couple in the hopes of escaping an abusive relationship in the United States. Her 8-year-old charge turns out to be a life-sized porcelain doll instead of a flesh-and-blood boy. It will go head to head with the Coen brothers’ comedy “Hail Caesar,” starring George Clooney and Channing Tatum.
On March 11, 2016, STX will bring out “The Free State of Jones,” an action drama starring McConaughey as a Southerner leading an armed rebellion during the Civil War. Gary Ross (“The Hunger Games”) directs the picture, which starts shooting next month. It will premiere opposite “Christ the Lord” and a bigscreen version of the popular videogame “Warcraft.”
The studio was announced last March and was created by producer Robert Simonds with the goal of fielding eight to 10 movies a year, with budgets ranging from $20 million to $80 million. It’s backed by private equity giant TPG, China’s Hony Capital and OddLot Entertainment co-founder Gigi Pritzker.
Since that time, Simonds has lined up a team of experienced executives, including former Fox marketing head and Disney production chief Oren Aviv as president and chief content officer and former Universal Pictures chairman Adam Fogelson as the studio’s chair.
The studio is distributing and marketing its own films, in addition to producing the pictures. STX Entertainment is unusual in that it is the first full-fledged studio to launch in the entertainment business in nearly two decades. It has a number of projects in active development, and the company expects to begin production on others in the coming months.
