'The Vow' Writers Penning MGM's 'On the Island'
The Vow writers Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn are taking on another romance tale, writing a new draft of the adaptation of On the Island, a book by Tracey Garvis Graves.
MGM optioned the book back in 2012, and Nick Mariani wrote the first draft. The story centers on a 30-year-old English teacher who gets stranded on a desert island with a 16-year-old student. At first, their only focus is survival, but as time goes on, they start to fall in love.
Garvis Graves first self-published On the Island, and then it sold hundreds of thousands of copies before Penguin Books’ Plume snapped it up and released it in paperback. While the novel has been compared to Fifty Shades of Grey on some sites on the Internet (probably because of the age difference between the main characters), it doesn't center on the eroticism, but is more of a love and romance story. But of course Fifty Shades' massive success at the box office does show that fans of beloved novels will show up at theaters in droves to support an adaptation.
Silverstein and Kohn are well-versed in writing romance tales for the big screen. Their previous work includes the scripts for Never Been Kissed, He's Just Not That Into You and Valentine's Day. Their most recent work was for The Vow, starring Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams, which earned a strong $196.1 million worldwide.
They are repped by CAA, Management 360 and Sloane, Offer.
