Fox Searchlight Makes a ‘Splash’ With Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton and Dakota Johnson
Fox Searchlight has acquired U.S. rights to director Luca Guadagnino’s thriller “A Bigger Splash,” starring Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Matthias Schoenaerts and Dakota Johnson.
Studiocanal, which financed the film, will distribute in France, the U.K., Germany, Australia and New Zealand, and it is handling international sales.
“A Bigger Splash” will hit theaters later this year.
Written by David Kajganich, the story revolves around a high profile couple — a famous rock star and a filmmaker (Schoenaerts and Swinton), who get an unexpected visit from an old friend and his daughter (Fiennes and Johnson) — creating a whirlwind of jealousy, passion and, ultimately, danger for everyone involved.
Johnson is the star of hot property “Fifty Shades of Grey,” which just crossed $300 million at the worldwide box office.
“A Bigger Splash” was the first project that Johnson filmed after “Fifty Shades of Grey” wrapped production last spring. She had several offers for bigger films but decided to stick with dramas in order to work with more well-respected directors.
Michael Costigan and Guadagnino are producing “A Bigger Splash.” Shooting began in Italy last summer.
“The film is a rich and enigmatic thriller, and we look forward to bringing Luca’s vision to American audiences later this year. And we have the added joy of working with old friends — Ralph, Tilda, and Matthias,” said Searchlight presidents Nancy Utley and Stephen Gilula.
Searchlight’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” also starring Fiennes and Swinton, is nominated for nine Oscars, including best picture.
“Splash” also reunites Guadagnino and Swinton, who last worked together on “I Am Love.”
“I am honored that Fox Searchlight has chosen to distribute ‘A Bigger Splash’ in the States. Tilda, Dakota, Ralph and Matthias, together with the rest of our cast, have brought to life what we feel and hope will be an unforgettable movie going experience based on the brilliant script by Dave Kajganich,” said Guadagnino.
