Coraline’ Puppet, Other Laika Items Drawing Hot Bidder Interest Ahead of Auction
Items from Laika’s trio of stop-motion films were on display Tuesday night, ahead of Thursday’s auction, drawing oohs and ahhs from all assembled. Puppets and props from “Coraline,” “ParaNorman” and Laika’s current release “The Boxtrolls” are up for bid by Heritage House, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Art of Elysium charity.
Jim Lentz, director of animation art at Heritage, is amazed at the attention the Laika items are receiving compared to items from some vintage animated fare that Heritage has auctioned off in the past. When something from “The Flintstones” or “Snow White” goes on the auction block and is posted online, he’s happy when it gets 300 views. “ ‘Coraline’ had 10,000 views in days! Days!” he said.
Bidding on the Laika lot is already taking place online at ha.com. As of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Coraline puppet wearing the blue star sweater was garnering the most views, 15,088, and with an Internet bid of $7,000. A puppet of “Boxtrolls” baddie Archibald Snatcher is currently entertaining a bid of $7,100.
Heritage officials say the response is their biggest ever for items from animated films, with every lot securing a bid. “It’s just crazy,” said Lentz. “And I think it’s a love of these movies. It all goes back to the films.”
Social media has played a big role in the auction. “We did a very large social-media campaign,” said Lentz. After the Laika lot went online, “My social-media person said, ‘We have 25,000 likes already on Facebook.’ ”
The auction will take place at noon PT. The auctioneer “will take the bids three ways. She’ll say $500 to the room, $500 to the phone and $500″ to people streaming the auction at HA.com/Live, if one is registered, Lentz said. He added that he has 850,000 registered bidders from 184 countries.
That should make for quite a lively afternoon.
