variety.com/2015/news/berlin-buyers-venture-into-dagur-karis-virgin-mountain-exclusive-1201429964/BERLIN– Dagur Kari’s character-driven drama “Virgin Mountain” has sold to more territories rolling off its warmly-received Gala premiere in Berlin. Sold by Bac Films and produced by Baltasar Kormakur’s RVK Studios, the movie has just been picked up by Imovision (Brazil), September Films (Benelux), Babilla Cine (Colombia) and Europafilm (Norway). Prior to its screening at the festival, “Virgin Mountain” was acquired by Alamode for Germany and Austria and MCF Megacom for Former Yugoslavia. Pic stars Icelandic newcomer Gunnar Jonsson as an lonely forty-something late-bloomer whose life is shaken up and ultimately transformed by a woman. The early critical response to “Virgin Mountain” suggests that the film marks Kari’s best film since its debut “Noi the Albino,” played at Cannes’ Un Certain Regard. Some insiders have also pointed out the film deserved a competition slot. In an interview with Variety, Kari said he was mostly “interested in creating the best possible characters, and the ones who are slightly off, misplaced or those who are more likely to cast off interesting situations, than the ones who fit in.” Although “Virgin Mountain” can’t be described as a crowd-pleaser, Kari argued it had a universal appeal. “It’s a inspirational story about a man taking a significant step into the rest of his life. This is something that most people can relate to, I hope,” said the helmer, who had last directed the English-language movie “The Good Heart” with Paul Dano.
