EuropaCorp Rolls Into EFM With Kawasaki’s Project, ‘Shut In’ And More
PARIS– EuropaCorp, whose U.S. distribution venture RED recently launched, will present a robust slate of English-language movies at the European Film Market.
The company will start pre-sales on an untitled Kawasaki project penned by Allison Burnett. The film, whose cast has not yet been unveiled, will turn on a man who devises a plan to save his gravely ill daughter at all costs, even his own life.
EuropaCorp, which just hit a home run with “Taken 3″ ($244 million worldwide so far), will also kick off three new movies in pre-production: Farren Blackburn’s (“Luther”) “Shut In” with Naomi Watts, Barry Sonnenfeld’s (“Men in Black”) “Nine Lives” with Kevin Spacey (pictured above) and Daniel Barber’s (“The Keeping Room”) “Underground.”
“Shut In” stars Watts as a widowed child psychologist who works from her home in rural New England and faces a terrifying winter storm. Lava Bear Films and Transfilm International are co-producing.
A high-concept comedy, “Nine Lives” toplines Golden-Globe winner Spacey as a workaholic businessman who gets mysteriously trapped into the body of his family cat following a terrible accident. It’s penned by Gwyn Lurie, Matt Allen, Daniel Antoniazzi and Ben Shiffrin.
Based on an original idea by Luc Besson (“Lucy”), “Underground” is written by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski. The project follows a New York City detective who gets pulled into a labyrinth-like underground system while investigating on a series of missing people.
Other English-language pics on EuropaCorp’s EFM slate include Magnus Martens’ (“Banshee”) “DNA,” Steven Quale’s “The Lake,” Louis Leterrier’s “Sea at War” and Matthias Hoene’s “Warriors Gate” (co-produced by China’s Fundamental Films).
“Sea at War,” penned by Besson, Robert Mark Kamen, Josh Oppenheimer and Tom Donnelly, tells the tale of a man’s epic journey to find his girlfriend who transformed into a mermaid after being involved in accident at sea. “The Lake,” written by Richard Wenk (“The Equalizer”) and Luc Besson, turns on a group of Navy Seals trying to solve a mystery and uncover an immense treasure in a lake in war-torn Serbia.
All these films are spearheaded out of EuropaCorp’s L.A.-based office and will be released by RED (Relativity EuropaCorp Distribution) in the U.S..
EuropaCorp has not given up on French movies, keeping up with mainstream laffers such as Benoit Graffin’s “Ordinary Troubles,” a rags-to-riches black comedy starring Sandrine Kiberlain (“9-Month Stretch”) and Edouard Baer (“Asterix and Obelix”). The movie, produced by Ella Films and EuropaCorp, is in post.
