variety.com/2015/film/news/lionsgate-planning-john-wick-sequel-1201426183/Lionsgate Planning ‘John Wick’ Sequel Lionsgate is planning a sequel to Keanu Reeves’ action-thriller “John Wick.” CEO Jon Feltheimer made the announcement Friday during a conference call with analysts to discuss the studio’s earnings for the third quarter ended Dec. 31. “We see ‘John Wick’ as a multiple-title action franchise,” Feltheimer said. The movie grossed $43 million domestically and $35 million internationally following its October launch. Feltheimer noted that the title had performed well in ancillary markets. “John Wick,” written by Derek Kolstad, and directed by Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, also starred Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Dean Winters, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo, and Willem Dafoe. In the action pic, Reeves plays a retired hitman seeking vengeance for the killing of his puppy, a gift from his late wife. The film was produced by Basil Iwanyk of Thunder Road Pictures, Leitch, Eva Longoria and Michael Witherill. Stahelski and Leitch previously worked with Reeves as stunt doubles on The Matrix trilogy. Kolstad is writing the sequel. He’s repped by APA, Circle of Confusion and Behr Abramson Levy LLP. Movies.com first reported that Stahelski and Leitch were developing a sequel.

Also coming back from the first movie are John Leguizamo, Bridget Monahan, Tom Sadowski, and Lance Reddick. Filming just started in New York and will decamp to Rome in the new year. As with John Wick, Basil Iwanyk produces through his Thunder Road banner along with David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, who also directs. Stahelski also directed the original film, about an ex-hitman who is brought out of retirement as he seeks revenge on a group of gangsters who took everything from him. Plot details are being kept under wraps. Derek Kolstad (John Wick) wrote the screenplay. The film will be released through Lionsgate’s Summit Entertainment. Lionsgate International will be selling the picture internationally. The original grossed $78.7 million worldwide last fall.
