Safehouse Signs First-Look Deal With Sony, Splits With Weed Road
Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell’s Safehouse Pictures has signed a two-year overall deal with Sony Pictures and split up with Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures.
During the Weed Road/Safehouse partnership, which was based at Warner Bros., Harold created and set up a six-film franchise based on the King Arthur legend.
The first film in the franchise, “Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur,” will be directed by Guy Ritchie, with Charlie Hunnam, Astrid Berger Frisby, Jude Law and Djimon Hounsou starring. Weed Road and Safehouse are producing with Ritchie’s producing partner Lionel Wigram. Harold is set to write the next installment.
Safehouse has hired Matt Schwartz as VP. He was previously VP of film and TV at the Weed Road/Safehouse collaborative.
Hannah Minghella and Michael De Luca, Sony’s co-presidents of production, said in a statement, “We are thrilled that Joby and Tory are making their home at Columbia Pictures. Their ability to create, write and produce original movies makes them a dynamic addition to our studio. They have great taste, commercial instincts and are wonderful people.”
Harold and Tunnell said they were grateful to Goldsman and Warner Bros., adding that both remain supportive.
Harold wrote and exec produced Tom Cruise’s “Edge of Tomorrow” and directed “Awake.” Other Safehouse projects include “Space Invaders,” in development; “The Falling” with Zac Efron attached to star; and the Sony Pictures Television/WGN America original series “Underground.”
Sony currently has more than 20 first-look deals including pacts with Neal Moritz’s Original Film, Scott Rudin and Will Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment.
Safehouse is represented by CAA and attorney Carlos Goodman of Bloom Hergott.
