Taiwan-based distributor Catchplay has struck a deal to co-finance and co-distribute a trio of upcoming movies from New Regency.
Pictures covered by the deal are Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hardy starring “The Revenant,” “Assassin’s Creed,” and “Splinter Cell.”
The deal is structured through a Hong Kong-based special purpose company Alpha Pictures and gives Catchplay co-distribution rights in Taiwan. Alpha Pictures is controlled by Alpha Animation and Culture. Rights in China, Hong Kong and Macau will be handled through Alpha Pictures.
Catchplay said that the deal “goes beyond the usual investment and distribution arrangements for tent pole Hollywood studio movies in the Greater Chinese territories,” and is a step towards a long-term co-financing and co-distribution arrangement.
Catchplay is backed by Cher Wang, one of the richest women in Asia, founder and chair of the smartphone manufacturer HTC.
“The Revenant” is now shooting and is set for a December 2015 release in North America by 20th Century Fox.
“Assassin’s Creed” is a spinoff from the Ubisoft game franchise and is directed by Justin Kurzel with Michael Fassbender to star. “Splinter Cell,” is another Ubisoft adaptation, also with Hardy starring, and to be directed by Doug Liman. Both pictures are expected to shoot this year.
“Adding the three New Regency films to our slate has definitely strengthened Catchplay’s distribution line-up for 2016 onwards. But more importantly, we value the long term partnership framework as it allows us to participate, learn from experience and hopefully witness the success of these great projects not just in the Greater Chinese markets but throughout the world,” said Daphne Yang, executive director of Catchplay. “The partnership aims to take full advantages of the fast growing box office in China through a more agile and localized approach.”
