The distributor has paid a whopping high seven-figure P&A commitment for A Walk In The Woods, the Ken Kwapis-directed drama that stars Sundance impresario Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, Nick Offerman and Kristen Schaal. I’m told this could be the second largest P&A commitment behind Dope‘s $18 million P&A high water mark. An aging travel writer sets out to hike the 2100 mile Appalachian Trail with a long estranged high school pal. They face off with each other, nature and an eccentric assortment of characters and learn some roads are better left untraveled. It’s based on the Bill Bryson memoir and Route One Films financed. The film debuted last Friday in the Premieres section, and scored very well with critics. The Rick Kerb and Bill Holderman script is one that Redford has wanted to make for more than a decade, once intending to take the road trip with his Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid pal Paul Newman. Chip Diggins, Holderman and Redford produced. All the usual suspects chased this one hard, and while Broad Green is still establishing itself–it will be staffing up in the coming months–the principals’ vision for the film, and the enormous commitment for a big theatrical release in late summer and early fall to factor into the Oscar race, won the day. They are in exclusive negotiations now and a deal should close before the awards are dished out. WME Global brokered the deal.
