The comedic drama premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Tuesday, where Danner received a standing ovation for her role as a widow who contemplates her own mortality following a tragic loss. A series of events propels her character into a renewed engagement with the people around her. Variety‘s own Justin Chang wrote in his review that the movie “works well enough as a smooth, emotionally effective blend of easy, generous laughs and lovely romantic interludes — grounded at every step by Danner’s calmly radiant, deeply felt performance.” Co-written by Brett Haley and Marc Basch, and produced by Rebecca Smith and Laura Smith, the film also stars Martin Starr, Sam Elliott, Malin Akerman and June Squibb. “I’ll See You in My Dreams” was crowd-sourced on Kickstarter for $61,000. “This film has so much heart and so much love for its characters, we immediately fell for it,” Andrew Karpen, CEO of Bleecker Street said. “Anchoring every scene, Blythe Danner delivers a performance that is so real and so touching from a script that is so funny and empathic, all of us at Bleecker Street can’t wait to bring it to audiences so they can discover what a beautiful story writer/director, Brett Haley, has created.” The deal was negotiated between Kent Sanderson of Bleecker Street, Kevin Iwashina and Zac Bright of Preferred Content, and Laura Smith and Rebecca Green of Two Flints.
